Description

Kent offers a very exciting way to bring a traditional and popular Japanese art form to your classroom. Students explore the history of Kabuki theatre while learning the basic movement techniques of the samurai (male) and onnagata (female), wearing kimono costumes, and learning to use the hand fan, dramatically popping them open one-handed. In this hands-on experience all students have the opportunity to dramatize a short section of a traditional Japanese folktale, such as Momotaro (The Peach Boy) or Issun Boshi (The One Inch Boy) using hand fans and donning kimonos. Time permitting, Kent will demonstrate kumadori, the kabuki makeup, on a couple of willing volunteers (washable, of course!).

Students Will

  • learn basic Japanese Kabuki movement techniques.
  • portray traditional kabuki characters in a Kabuki mini-scene.
  • study the history of Japanese kabuki dance theater.
  • wear kimono costumes.
  • try out hand fans and learn traditional kabuki fan flair
